American rhythm & blues singer Carolyn Malachi and her band delivered a dynamic two-day program in Chengdu March 21-22. At a lecture to some 200 people, the band discussed their unique music style, blending R&B, jazz and hip-hop, as well as the role that music has had in expressing American culture and history. Audience members joined the band on stage to create their own spoken-word music by reciting poems in Chinese while the band improvised music along with them. A master class brought together 120 students from three local universities for a demonstration, plus discussion of singing technique, jazz chords and blending music styles. The program concluded with a concert that drew a standing-room-only crowd of more than 400 at Fangsuo Bookstore in Taikuli.
