Starting Feb. 15, 2022, U.S. citizens over the age of 16 who will renew their passports with the DS-82 application form are eligible to do so via mail and pay their application fee online.
If you require a new passport, a renewal passport, or just aren’t sure, our simple Passport Wizard will assist you in determining your eligibility and gathering the documentation needed to apply.
There is no walk-in service for United States citizens who require a service related to passports, citizenship, or birth registration. These services are by appointment only.
Passport services are not available on weekends, or on China or U.S. Holidays.
The processing time for routine passport renewals is 4-6 weeks. If you are traveling within the next 2 weeks, please see Emergency Passports for further information.
Do You Know What Type of Forms You Need?
If you already know which forms to complete, you can:
You can fill out the correct form, or find information about your passport status at Travel.State.gov
You must provide one photo with your passport application. All our photo policies apply to both adults and children under age 16. We have a few exceptions to our photo policies for infants.
Passport applications must be made in person at the American Citizen Services unit of the Embassy and Consulates. If the applicant is a minor, the minor needs to appear with his or her parents as well. Information on third-party attendance during the passport application process is available here (PDF 115 KB). Passports and passport cards are printed in the United States and delivered to China via a courier service. Consequently, due to production or delivery factors it may take considerably longer to receive one or the other. Limited validity emergency passports may be issued in special circumstances. After you fill out the application online, print it, and bring it with you the day of your appointment. Please be reminded that the expedited service is only available if you apply for a passport in the U.S.
