New York’s “Matuto” Brings American Diversity to Southwest China

Jun. 6-7, Chengdu – Students and lovers of music in Chengdu participated in workshops, joined Conga lines, and danced to the cosmopolitan beats of Matuto, a New York-based band that is currently touring China as part of the State Department’s American Music Abroad program. The five-member band, comprising two guitarists, two percussionists and a rip-roaring accordionist, provided a public lecture for music lovers and a concert at a trendy theater, as well as a Master class with Sichuan Conservatory students and performance at the popular Fangsuo bookstore. The band’s catchy rhythmic style, which draws heavily from Brazilian traditions, brought everyone gathered to their feet dancing, creating an unforgettable people-to-people experience for performers and audience alike.
