May 19, Shanghai – During a trip to promote educational exchange, Julia Chang Bloch, the first Asian American to be appointed Ambassador, sat for a Public Affairs Section-filmed interview. Ambassador Bloch described her extensive career in international affairs and government service, beginning in 1964 as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malaysia and culminating as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal in 1989. A native of China who came to the U.S. at age nine, Bloch grew up in San Francisco and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a master’s degree from Harvard.
