Ice Skating Event Introduces American Sports Culture to Chengdu Public

Together with Ice & Joy Skating Rink at IFS on August 10, 2015, the U.S. Consulate Chengdu hosted an ice skating called “Skate Forward with US!” that combined basic skating instruction with carefully crafted exercises designed to promote American sports culture. Led by Public Affairs Summer Intern Kayla Blomquist, who is a competitive figure skater for the University of Denver, Consulate volunteers from the Public Affairs Section, Consular Section, Management Section, and Health Unit interacted with local residents of all ages on games and activities on the ice that emphasized sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance. These exercises encouraged Chinese guests to not only enjoy a sport that is much more popular in the U.S. than in China, but also appreciate values that are important to sports culture in America.  This event introduced American sports culture to a largely young audience.
