Jun. 17, Nanjing – Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Lisa Heller delivered inspiring remarks to new graduates, parents, and high level dignitaries from the U.S. and China at the 30-year commencement ceremony of the prestigious Hopkins-Nanjing Center. Heller spoke about the need for graduates of the program to use their superior cross cultural knowledge and language skills to continue pushing U.S. and China closer together. She drew on her own experience as an English teacher in Dalian before joining the State Department, an experience which led her to join the Foreign Service. Established 30 years ago, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC) is one of China’s oldest joint academic and most successful ventures, and offers Master’s Degrees and one-year certificate programs for elite Chinese and international students. Many U.S. diplomats and China experts as well as current leaders in China are HNC alumni.
