May 10, Shanghai – The Shanghai American Center hosted Rodney Hollingsworth and Uche Sam, two expat American rappers, for a workshop on hip hop culture and freestyle rap. Sam and Hollingsworth emphasized how hip hop has played a role in giving disenfranchised Americans a voice to talk about issues in their communities and how this influence spread globally since hip hop’s founding in New York during the 1970s. The two emcees also performed original songs and showed the group, many of whom had never heard of Hip Hop, how they formulate rhymes spontaneously. This event was part of Shanghai PAS’ Sessions@theShAC series, which introduces American music and culture through intimate acoustic concerts.
