The American Foodie Tour Contest is organized by the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service in Beijing and the U.S. Embassy.

Description of Contest Objectives

The purpose of this contest is to promote increased travel by Chinese citizens to the United States, and in particular to encourage tourists to discover a wider range of destinations and American cuisines in the United States.

 

  1. Weekly Photos Contest

Each week a region of the United States will be promoted, which will be announced at 9 a.m. (Beijing time) on Mondays via the Embassy’s social media platforms.  Contestants will be asked to post an original photo of an American dish from the region and include the name of the dish and where it comes from.  All photos must be post by 1 p.m. Beijing time on Friday each week on the participants Weibo account using the contest hashtag #行美国品美食# (#XingMeiguoPinMeishi#).  All photo entries that meet these criteria will be reviewed by a panel of judges, which will consist of representatives of the local travel and tourism industry in China and U.S. Embassy staff.  The panel will select the top photo submission for that week.  The winner will receive a “weekly prize” and be entered into a “grand prize” drawing.  There will be a total of five weekly winners, one for each week.  There will also be one “grand prize” winner, selected from among the weekly winners, at the end of the contest.

The rules:

  • Photos must be original, taken by the contest participant, not from third-party sources.
  • All original photos must include an American dish that comes from a city/state/destination in the region being promoted that week.
  • Photos must include captions that list the name of the dish, and where it comes from in that region.
  • Contestants must be 18 years and older.
  • Contestants must be citizens of the People’s Republic of China. Contestants may not be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.  (See additional rules for eligibility below.)
  • Entries must be submitted in Chinese or English.
  • Only one entry per person will be accepted for each week of the contest.

 2. Special Trivia Contests on Wednesdays and Fridays each week

 

On Wednesdays and Fridays of each week, a trivia question will be announced at 9 a.m. (Beijing time) via the Embassy’s social media platforms.  The question will focus on the region promoted for that week and will be related to travel and tourism and American cuisine.  The prize for that day’s trivia question will also be announced at the same time.  All responses must be submitted by midnight (Beijing time) on that same day to BeijingContest@state.gov.  All valid responses will be entered into a random drawing to be conducted by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. The winner will be notified by email on the next working day.

 

The rules:

  • All responses must answer the question and be relevant to the region promoted for that week.
  • The U.S. Embassy in Beijing will determine all valid responses.
  • Contestants must be 18 years and older
  • Contestants must be citizens of the People’s Republic of China. Contestants may not be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. (See additional rules for eligibility below.)
  • Entries must be submitted in Chinese or English.
  • Only one entry per person will be accepted for each week of the contest.

 

Platform(s)

Events from this contest may be announced and promoted on various Mission Social Media platforms including WeChat, Sina Weibo, and Tencent Weibo or other media platforms but the photo contest entry and administration will take place through Weibo and the trivia contest entry and administration will take place e-mail.  Contest winners may also be announced on WeChat, Sina Weibo, and Tencent Weibo or other media platforms; however, WeChat, Sina and Tencent are not partners or sponsors of the contest.

 

How to Enter – Weekly Photo Contest

Participants must post their original photos on their Weibo accounts by 1:00 pm each Friday of the contest (April 21, 28, May 5, 12 or 19).  Entries must be submitted in Chinese or English.  Only one submission per person per week is allowed.

Participants must post their original photos along with the following information:

  • The contest hashtag #行美国品美食# (#XingMeiguoPinMeishi#)
  • Name of the America Dish
  • Region of the United States where the dish comes from
  • Weibo Handle / Name

 

Winners will be contacted by Embassy staff to send the following additional information to the BeijingContest@state.gov email to be eligible to claim their prize and be included in the Grand Prize drawing:

  • Selfie photo – used to announce the winner (optional)
  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Physical address
  • Cell number

 

How to Enter – Special Trivia Contests

Participants must submit their entries and information to BeijingContest@state.gov  by midnight Beijing time on Wednesdays and Fridays for the trivia contests.

Entries must be submitted in Chinese or English.  Only one submission per person per day is allowed. Participants must submit their correct answer to the trivia question along with the following information:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • E-mail address
  • Physical address
  • Cell number

 

Participation in the American Foodie Tour contest is deemed as acceptance of these Official Contest Rules.  Once an entry is submitted, it is considered a final submission and may not be modified, edited or replaced.

 

The photo contest commences at «9 a.m. (Beijing time), Monday, April 17», in «Beijing».  Entries may be submitted between «9 a.m. (Beijing time), Monday », and « 1 p.m. (Beijing time), Friday» each week for five weeks (Apr 21, 28, May 5, 12 and 19), ending on May 19th. Judging begins on «Friday, 1 p.m.» each week and the weekly winner will be announced by Tuesday of the following week.

The special trivia contests begin on April 19th at «9 a.m. (Beijing time), on Wednesdays and Fridays each week» for five weeks, ending on May 19th.  Responses may be submitted between «9 a.m. (Beijing time)», and « midnight (Beijing time)» on either the Wednesday or Friday.  All valid responses, as judged by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, will entered into a random drawing the next working day, and the winner will be announced on that day.

Content Requirements

a. Submissions must not contain obscenity, explicit sexual material, nudity, profanity, graphic violence, calls or incitement to violence, commercial solicitation, or commercial promotion. Submissions must conform to local law and must not contain content or images that could be considered abusive, inflammatory, denigrating, or disrespectful to any of the Contest Sponsors, or to any groups, individuals or institutions.  Submissions must adhere both in appearance and in fact to the norms of civil discourse.  In other words, the content of all submissions must be suitable for a global, public audience.

b. Submissions must be original content created by the contestant and must not contain any elements that are protected by someone else’s copyright or otherwise subject to third party intellectual property or proprietary rights, including privacy and publicity rights (except as expressly permitted below in (d)). Contest Sponsors recognize no allowance for “fair use” of copyrighted material, nor do Contest Sponsors recognize allowance for use of licensed materials created or owned by a third party.

c. Contest Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify, at their sole and absolute discretion, any submission that does not adhere to these criteria and to the intent and substance of these Official Contest Rules.

d. In the event of any question or difference of views regarding compliance with, interpretation, or application of these content requirements or other provisions of these Official Contest Rules, Contest Sponsors reserve the exclusive right to resolve such questions or differences of views in their sole discretion.

e. By submitting a photograph to the contest, the contestant affirms that he or she has obtained written consent from all individuals whose image or likeness appears in the photograph (or from the individuals’ parent/legal guardian if any such individuals are considered a minor in their country of residence), and that he or she has obtained the necessary rights, licenses, consents, and permissions to use all material such as music, images, text and other content in the submission. The contestant further affirms that he or she is prepared to provide reliable documentation of any and all such consents, licenses, etc., upon request.  Failure to obtain such rights, license consents, and permissions may result in the disqualification of the photo submission at the Contest Sponsors’ sole and absolute discretion.

f. Technical Format Requirements

Photo submissions must be in JPG format, 2 megabytes or smaller, but photo size must be no smaller than 1024×768 pixels.  Submissions should not have any visible watermarks, signatures, or personally identifiable information.

Retouching of Photos:  The submitted photograph cannot be significantly retouched: nothing in the photograph (people, animals, scenery, objects, etc.) may be altered, removed, augmented or rearranged.  Cropping is permitted, as is modest darkening or lightening of parts of the image.

 

Eligibility

  1. Contestants must be at least 18 years old on the date of entry into the contest. Contestants must be citizen of the People’s Republic of China and may not be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
  2. Contestants should be a follower of U.S. Mission Sina Weibo or Wechat social media platforms.
  3. The individual submitting the entry will be considered the contestant and will be the only individual eligible to compete for the prize. Organizations are not eligible to compete for the prize, either as an entity, or through representation by an individual.  In order to be eligible for the prize, the contestant must provide complete and accurate information.
  4. The following individuals are not eligible to participate in the contest: Employees, interns, directors, and officers of the Contest Sponsors, or the U.S. Government; or any employees, interns, directors, officers of any agencies, companies or entities involved in the administration, advertising, judging, creation, development, execution, and/or fulfillment of the contest, and the immediate family members (defined as spouse, recognized partner, parent, child, sibling, and spouse or “step” of each) and those living in the same household of each such individual.
  5. Once a submission has been accepted for entry into the contest, the contestant’s name (or User ID, if the contestants wishes to remain anonymous) and country may be publicly identified at the sole discretion of the contestants.

Selection of a Winner

  1. All submissions are subject to pre-screening by Contest Sponsors to ensure compliance with these Official Contest Rules. Any submissions out of compliance will not be eligible for consideration.  Contest Sponsors reserve the right in their sole and absolute discretion to verify in the final analysis whether a potential finalist or potential winning submission has fully complied with these Official Contest Rules before posting to the contest site, awarding prize, recognizing as winner, etc.
  2. Judges: The contest jury for the weekly photo contest consists of representatives from the local travel and tourism industry in China, as well as representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.  The contest jury for the special trivia contests is comprised of staff members of the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service and the U.S. Embassy in Beijing.
  3. Judging criteria for the weekly photo contest: Submissions will be judged on the following:

– Creativity/originality of the American dish.

– Verification that dish comes from the region promoted for that week.

– Any special references on the significance of the dish, particularly the area where it was invented.

 

Judging criteria for the special contests: All submissions must contain valid answers that respond to the question and are relevant to the region promoted that week.

 

Submissions for the weekly photo contest and special trivia contests will be screened by U.S. Embassy Beijing for compliance with the contest rules and top submissions will be reviewed and judged by the judging panel.

 

  • Winners:
    Each winner and/or finalist in the weekly photo contest will be required to sign and return to Contest Sponsors a statement of eligibility and liability/publicity release and provide a short bio (where applicable) and a brief statement about the submission; otherwise the winner and/or finalist will be ineligible for any prize. Trivia contest winners are not required to sign and return to Contest Sponsors a statement of eligibility and liability/publicity release or provide a short bio and a brief statement about the submission.  The inability of Contest Sponsors to contact a potential winner may result in disqualification and/or selection of an alternate winner from among all remaining eligible submissions.
  • Photo winners and finalists will be first notified by Weibo and subsequently via the e-mail address they provided upon entry. Trivia contest winners will be notified via the e-mail address they provided upon entry.  Winners and finalists may be announced on the Embassy website and/or social media pages.  Winners and finalists may choose to use an alias instead of their real name and may request other identifying information be kept private. Note: American Foodie Tour weekly photo contest winners will be ineligible to win subsequent weekly photo contests, though they will have an opportunity to participate in the grand prize drawing.
  • Winners have to confirm the acceptance of the prize in an email reply within three calendar days. If the acceptance is not confirmed by the required date, the Contest Sponsors reserve the right to select an alternative winner.  Each winner must provide a valid physical mailing address where a prize, if any, is to be shipped.  Contest Sponsors are not responsible for any problems related to the shipping of any prize, including, but not limited to, theft, delay, damage, or destruction/accidental loss by the shipping carrier.

The American Foodie Tour Grand and Weekly prize packages are listed below.  Specific prizes contained within the packages are subject to specific restrictions listed below.

 

Grand Prize (a prize package for one winner) selected from among the weekly photo contest winners:

Prize Rules and Restrictions

 

Any unused portion of the prize is not transferable, convertible, or exchangeable and cannot be taken as cash.  All taxes on or in connection with any prize, and the reporting consequences thereof, are the sole and exclusive responsibility of the winner.

 

Baskin Robbins

  • The contest will offer multiple participants opportunities to win one (1) Baskin Robbins voucher for a child sized ice cream cone.
  • The following conditions apply;
    • The coupon may be exchanged for any flavor child size ice cream.
    • The voucher is valid until June 30, 2017.

Delta Airlines Round Trip Tickets:

  • Two (2) round-trip Economy Class (T class) tickets on Delta Air Lines, from China to any destination in the United States where Delta Airlines operates. The following restrictions apply:
    • Date: Tickets are valid between March 31, 2017 and December 31, 2017. Seats availability is subject to blackout dates as stipulated by Delta Air Lines policy. (Blackout dates are from July 01 to Aug 31, 2017, and Chinese National day/ the Chinese Spring festival public holiday.)
    • Ticket is non-refundable, non-reroutable and non-transferable. Validity extensions will not be allowed.
    • Additional change fee is required.
    • Only the winner whose name has been announced will be eligible to use this award.
    • No award miles will be accrued.

  • The following conditions apply:
    • The Food & Wine Festival lasts 75 days beginning August 31 – Nov. 13, 2017.
    • Valid for entry into four Walt Disney World Theme Parks with park hopping privileges.
    • Hopper tickets cannot be redeemed for cash.

  • The contest will offer multiple contest participants the opportunity to win two (2) packages each including a customized travel plan and a driver license translation card.
  • The following conditions apply:
    • The value of the customized travel plan is CNY 4000. Note that receipt of this prize does not guarantee a U.S. visa and the winner must apply for and receive a visa in compliance with U.S. laws and regulations.
      • Please apply early rather than late when you need us to make a Travel Plan for you.
      • The prizes are valid for 12 months from the date of award, but not later than September 1st, 2018.
      • The prizes have no cash value and may not be sold or in any way transferred.
    • The value of the driver license translation card is CNY 1860. Note that receipt of this prize does not guarantee a U.S. visa and the winner must apply for and receive a visa in compliance with U.S. laws and regulations.

  • The contest will offer multiple participants opportunities to win one (1) Dunkin’ Donuts voucher for any one (1) medium beverage and two (2) donuts (certain products are excluded)
  • The following conditions apply:
    • The voucher is valid until December 31, 2017.
    • The voucher may be used at any Dunkin’ Donuts location in Beijing.
    • The voucher is only valid for one use. Please present the coupon before payment.
    • This voucher is not redeemable for cash and cannot be combined with any other benefits; lost or missing vouchers will not be honored; copies are not valid.

  • The contest will offer two (2) participants opportunities to win one (1) round-trip Coach Class ticket from Beijing to Honolulu, plus one of the inter-island of your choice served by Hawaiian Airlines.
  • The following terms and conditions apply:
    • Validity of the ticket is from July 4, 2017 – July 3, 2018.
    • Redemption deadline is three months after issuance date of the award letter.
    • Cut-off date for booking is 30 days prior to departure.

Hertz Car Rental Vouchers

  • The contest will offer multiple participants opportunities to win one (1) Hertz Rental Car voucher valid for U.S. $200 in rental costs.
  • The following terms and conditions apply:
    • The voucher can be redeemed at Hertz participating locations worldwide.
    • Car rental must be redeemed for one rental. No credit / refund will be issued on any unused portion of the prize.
    • The voucher can only be used by award winner. It is non-exchangeable for cash.

  • Ticket valid from 01 June 2017 to 31 May 2018.
  • The following conditions apply:
    • The ticket is non-transferable, non-reroutable, and non-endorsable.
    • The ticket cannot be upgraded, exchanged for cash or resold.
    • Frequent flyer miles, promotional offers or other discounts do not apply.
    • The ticket does not include any tax or applicable charge.

Liability and Rights

  1. Contest Sponsors do not endorse any submissions or messages expressed therein, and Contest Sponsors expressly disclaim any and all liability in connection with the submitted essays including disputes between collaborators related to a submission.
  2. The contest and its sponsors do not permit copyright infringing activities or infringement of any other intellectual property rights, and Contest Sponsors reserve the right to remove and disqualify any submission they deem to be in violation of another party’s copyright or other intellectual property rights.
  3. Contestants retain sole ownership of their original work. The submission remains the intellectual property of contestant, and the Contest Sponsors and U.S. Government make no claim of copyright as to the work of any individual who enters the contest.  Contestant specifically agrees to give the Contest Sponsors permission to use all content submitted for purposes of judging the contest.  Finalists and/or winners will be required to grant Contest Sponsors, with proper attribution through whatever means they deem appropriate, a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sub-licensable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, and/or display the submission in any media formats and through any media channels in perpetuity in connection with the activities and operations of the contest.
  4. Contestant assumes sole responsibility for the contest submission and the material contained in it, and for any consequences of submitting or posting it.
  5. Contest Sponsors reserve the right at any time to verify the validity of entries and of contestants and to disqualify any contestant or entry deemed not in compliance with these Official Contest Rules. Contest Sponsors also reserve the right to request further documentation, at their sole and absolute discretion, to verify eligibility and compliance with these Official Contest Rules.
  6. If a prize or any portion thereof is unavailable, Contest Sponsors, in their sole discretion, reserve the right to substitute the prize with another prize of equal or greater value and/or specification.
  7. Contest Sponsors reserve the right, at any time and in their sole discretion, to disqualify and/or deem ineligible any individual who they reasonably believe (i) has violated the Official Contest Rules; (ii) has violated the terms of use of platform, or (iii) is acting in a bad faith, or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
  8. Contest Sponsors reserve the right to modify, suspend, terminate or cancel the contest at their discretion for any reason.
  9. Contestant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Contest Sponsors, their parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, officers, directors, employees, interns, and agents, from and against any and all claims, damages, obligations, losses, liabilities, costs or debts, and expenses (including but not limited to attorney’s fees) arising from (i) violation of these Official Contest Rules; (ii) violation of any third party right, including without limitation any copyright, trademark, intellectual property, privacy, publicity, or other proprietary right in connection with the contest; or (iii) any claim that a contest submission caused any harm, including financial, to any third party.  These indemnification and hold harmless obligations will survive indefinitely beyond the conclusion of the contest.
  10. The conduct, judging, and awarding of prizes will be carried out in full compliance with applicable U.S. law and host country law. In the event of a conflict between U.S. law and host country law, U.S. law shall apply.
  11. Contest Sponsors and the U.S. Government will take reasonable measures to protect privacy data, personally identifiable information, and other sensitive data of contestants. Contact information provided by contestants may be stored by the U.S. Embassy and may be used to contact contestants for other purposes in the future.  This information may be shared with the co-sponsor of the contest and/or be made available to third parties, to the extent permitted by law.
  12. Contest Sponsors assume no liability or responsibility for any loss or harm resulting from any user’s participation in or attempt to participate in the contest or ability or inability to upload, download, or otherwise access any information in connection with participating in the contest. Contest Sponsors assume no responsibility or liability for technical problems, or technical malfunctions arising in connection with the operation of the contest, including: hardware or software errors; faulty computer, telephone, cable, satellite, network, electronic, wireless or Internet connectivity, or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any Internet service providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled or faulty data transmissions; failure of any email transmissions to be sent or received; lost, late, delayed or intercepted email transmissions; inaccessibility of the contest site in whole or in part for any reason; traffic congestion on the Internet or the contest site; unauthorized human or non-human intervention in the operation of the contest, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering, hacking, theft, virus, bugs, worms; or destruction of any aspect of the contest, or loss, miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility or unavailability of an email account used in connection with the contest.
  13. Use of contest site is at user’s own risk. Contest Sponsors are not responsible for any personal injury, property damage, or losses of any kind which may be sustained to computer equipment resulting from participation in the contest, use of the contest site or the downloading of information from the contest site.  By participating in the contest, the contestant releases Contest Sponsors from any and all claims arising from or relating to such contestant’s participation in the contest, whether directly or indirectly.
  14. Contest Sponsors are not liable in the event that any portion of the contest is cancelled or delayed due to weather, fire, strike, acts of war or terrorism, or any other reason.
