EVUS (Electronic Visa Update System)

Beginning November 29, nationals of the People’s Republic of China holding 10-year visas will not be able to travel to the United States without a valid EVUS enrollment. For travelers taking more than one flight to reach the United States, the EVUS enrollment will be verified when they check-in for their first flight. Nationals of the People’s Republic of China who hold a 10-year visa and are seeking to enter the U.S. through a land or sea port of entry must also have a valid EVUS enrollment. Until November 29, travelers may continue to travel to the United States without an enrollment.

Background: In November 2014, the Governments of the United States and the People’s Republic of China entered into a reciprocal agreement to issue visitor and business travel visas (B1/B2, B1 and B2) with 10-year validity.  That same agreement recognized that travelers would be required to periodically complete an online form updating their information.  This requirement is new, and is similar to requirements that nationals from 38 countries currently must follow before traveling to the United States.  Enrollment in EVUS is separate from the visa application process.

What is EVUS?  EVUS is an online system used by People’s Republic of China passport holders possessing a 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 (visitor) visa to periodically update basic biographic information in order to facilitate their travel, by land , air  or water from any country, to the United States.  The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin requiring these travelers to have a valid EVUS enrollment before traveling to the United States starting on November 29, 2016.  The U.S. Government expects that EVUS will apply to additional countries in the future.

What is an EVUS Enrollment? An information update on EVUS is known as an enrollment.  In addition to a valid visa, travelers will be required to complete an EVUS enrollment to be admitted to the United States.  Enrollments generally last for two years or until the traveler’s maximum validity B visa or passport expires, whichever comes first.  Chinese holders of 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 visas will need to update their information before traveling to the United States (if their two-year enrollment has expired), or when they get a new passport or a new maximum validity B visa.

How much does EVUS cost?  CBP will not collect a fee for an EVUS enrollment when the website opens for early enrollments. CBP anticipates an EVUS enrollment fee will eventually be implemented, but there is currently no time frame for when the fee will be imposed. Until the fee is implemented, travelers can complete their EVUS enrollment without charge.

How do I enroll? Can someone enroll on my behalf?  Each EVUS enrollment will require the traveler to provide his or her name, birth date, emergency contact, passport information, and biographical and employment information. Travelers will also answer questions related to travel eligibility. A third party such as a friend, relative, or travel industry professional may submit the required information. The traveler is responsible for the truthfulness and accuracy of all information submitted on his or her behalf.

How long will it take to enroll?  Most travelers will spend 10-15 minutes to answer the questions and verify the information.  After travelers submit their information, most responses will return within minutes, but some  may take up to 72 hours.

When do I have to enroll? Although Chinese nationals holding a 10-year visa in a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China may continue to travel to the United States without an enrollment until November 29, 2016, CBP strongly encourages all 10-year visa holders to enroll now at www.EVUS.gov.   For more information about the EVUS program, travelers can visit www.cbp.gov/EVUS.

The Call Center is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and is staffed with Mandarin speaking operators.  However, the Call Center will be closed on U.S. federal holidays. What if I don’t enroll by November 29?  All Chinese nationals holding a 10-year B1/B2, B1 and B2 visa in a passport issued by the People’s Republic of China who plan to travel to the United States on or after November 29 will need to have a valid EVUS enrollment. Those traveling by air will not be able to obtain a boarding pass from the airlines without a successful EVUS enrollment. If arriving at a land or sea port of entry, the traveler will be required to have a valid EVUS enrollment before being admitted to the United States. Not enrolling in EVUS prior to departing for the United States may delay a traveler’s travel plans.
