Chinese-American Author Touts Strong U.S.-China Influence in Her Writing

Chinese-American short story author Su-Yee Lin shared insights about how her Chinese heritage and exchange experiences in China have influenced her writing for an audience of 30 people at the Shanghai American Center. Su-Yee, a former Fulbright scholar and current artist-in-residence at Shanghai’s Swatch Peace Art Hotel, spoke about her fascination with magical realism, which combines extraordinary events with real settings, and how the American immigrant experience has influenced her writing. Su-Yee read her 2014 story White Snake, Green Snake, which reimagines a Hangzhou folk tale, before answering questions from the audience of fans and fellow writers.
