English Language Fellow Helps Shanghai Audience Avoid Miscommunication

English Language Fellow Austin Pack continued his teaching English language workshop series with a session on cross-cultural communication at the Shanghai American Center for a packed house of 76 local students, teachers and young professionals. The workshop centered around comparing and contrasting the differences in U.S. and Chinese communication styles, ideas about rank and power, and ways to deal with conflict.  By analyzing incidents of miscommunication between Chinese and Westerners, participants came away with a deeper understanding of certain aspects of American Culture such as many Americans’ preference to communicate directly, minimize power and rank differences, and resolve conflict in a direct manner.  To learn about our upcoming events please follow us on Douban or Wanshe.
